Improvements to the Discover map

# Product Updates

We’ve begun testing a new feature on the map in Discover that allows you to explore any neighborhood you care about.

Since Discover launched last year, you’ve been able to see content on the map in your neighborhood and those nearby. Soon, you will be able to see content in any neighborhood you care about in the United States.

There will be two ways to see content in areas outside your own neighborhood and those nearby:

  1. Drag the map and search the area - As always, you will be able to drag the map to any area, but now, as long as that area is in the United States, you will be able to see content wherever you look by clicking “Search this area”.

Drag the map and search this area

2. Enable your location - You will have the option to enable your location to see what’s going on around you on the Discover map, whether you are at home or on the go. When you enable your location, it is only visible to you on the map and never to anyone else on Nextdoor.

Enable your location

What is changing?

  1. When you move the map outside your neighborhood and tap or click “Search this area” you will be able to see content on the Discover map.
  2. Only posts with the Anyone visibility setting and a precise location pin are eligible to be seen on the map.
  3. For the first time, you will have the option to enable your location on Discover.
  4. When you enable your location, you will be the only person who can see your location on the map. Other Nextdoor neighbors will never see your current location.

What is not changing?

  1. You will only be able to see Help Map content in your own neighborhood and nearby neighborhoods.

Why has Nextdoor made this update?

We created Discover to help you see what’s going on around you. Previously, we only showed you content for the neighborhood where you live. But we know there are other neighborhoods you may care about:

  1. Where you work
  2. Where your friends and family live
  3. Where your kids go to school
  4. The new neighborhood you are considering for a move
  5. Any unfamiliar areas where you may travel

And, we want to be able to help you find what you need in all of the neighborhoods that are important to you. From favorite local restaurants near the hotel where you’re staying on your next trip, to upcoming events and things to do when you visit your friends and family, to items available for sale and for free outside your immediate neighborhood, Discover can help you explore what’s going on around you wherever you are.
